Contemporary Kitchen - Silver Award, ASID CAPEN 2017

Playful Blues – MC Project, Mountain View Ca.

An existing 84 square foot non-functional kitchen, separated from the rest of the house, was very limiting for a single parent of young children. A study and bathroom were combined to create an efficient kitchen with an accessible pantry.

A narrow walnut-island functions as a place for prepping, eating and doing home work. The island and upper cabinet’s open shelves provide storage and visual appeal.

Backsplash mosaic tiles inspired the color scheme. Pale gray upper cabinets and light wood floors are grounded with deep blue base cabinets. The walnut wood-island and accents of orange warm the space.

The strong horizontal line of the upper cabinets is repeated in the glass subway and mosaic tile layout. Movement of the mosaic pattern creates a visual texture that brings cheer.

Natural light combined with overhead task and accent fixtures, provide layers of lighting in a kitchen that has now become the hub of the house.

Razzle Dazzle

An existing drab powder room, is transformed to reflect the client’s glamorous style by incorporating a unique travertine sink into the design to provide the focal point of the space. A complimentary color scheme of rich gold and deep blue achieved by a unique combination of tile, wallpaper and fixtures further enhances the space.

The walls enveloped in blues are contrasted and balanced by the gold travertine floors. The rough and smooth texture of the sink, enhanced by floor accent lights, provides a contrast to the smooth iridescent mosaic tile. The textural appeal of the iridescent tile plays well with that of the wall paper.

While the dynamic grid patterns at varying scales in the wallpaper, mosaic tile and the floor add structure, the undulating lines of the glass partition, circular sink and the whimsical shape of the lighting fixtures bring harmony to the space. Combination of unique textures and the repetition of shape and color makes the powder room “Razzle Dazzle”!
